Sifu Joel Schlamauss
Born in Lima, Peru, Joel Schlamauss, has been training various martial arts collectively for 25 years. At the age of nine, he began studying Kung Fu at the local YMCA. At that time his parents were looking for a way to keep him out of fist fights and teach him discipline. It was short lived and he resigned when his instructor left.
A few years after his parents enrolled him in a Kung Fu school in Chinatown, a dangerous side of town, near Barrios Altos. However, the school's teacher mostly spoke Chinese so, Joel became disinterested and his attendance was sporadic. Though the training was meant to teach him counter-offensive discipline he mainly learned his skills on the streets, avoiding fist and knife fights from rival schools.
In 1994 Joel's family moved to Miami, Florida and he began studying at Miami Dade College. Soon after, he preceded to Florida International University, and finally finished at Berkelee College of Music in Boston, with a Master in Sound Engineering. Around the time of his graduation, he rediscovered his interest in Martial Arts while watching Bruce Lee movies.
In June of 1997, he discovered Unified Martial Art Academy and started studying Jeet Kune Do, Muay Thai and, Philipino Kali. After continuing his enrollment for a number of years and attending countless seminars under Dan Inosanto, Master Chai Sirasute, Cass Magda, Erick Paulson, Francis Fong, and others he was allowed to train as an Apprentice Instructor at UMMA. Finally, in 2014 he was granted a full active instructorship under Dan Inosanto and branched off with Gil Morales, a fellow UMMA student, to create their own school.
